75th Cannes Film Festival

One of the highlights at the Cannes Film Festival this year was the Masterclass conducted on May 26 with Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, whose career spans nearly three decades. Born in Copenhagen in 1965, he made his acting debut in Nicholas Winding Refn's 1996 Pusher.

Italian French actress-director Valeria Bruni Tedeschi takes us back to the 80s in her fifth offering, Forever Young, as she shines a light on the legendary director Patrice Chéreau, who founded the acting school Theatre Nanterre-Amandiers located just outside of Paris. Through Tedeschi’s lens, we watch Chéreau’s unorthodox attempts at eliciting various emotions from his students.

Romantic thriller Stars at Noon, based on Denis Johnson’s 1986 novel of the same name, stars Golden Globe nominee Margaret Qualley (Maid) as Trish, a headstrong journalist who has an affair in Nicaragua with a mysterious, soft-spoken English businessman, Daniel, played by Joe Alwyn (Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk). While the book is set in the 80s, legendary director Claire Denis (High Life, Both Sides of the Blade) has updated the backdrop from that of the Nicaraguan revolution to the present day COVID pandemic era.

The numbers are still not where they should be: female filmmakers are in the vast minority worldwide. At the Cannes Festival, HFPA-president Helen Hoehne sat down with four of the lucky ones - French Iranian director Emily Atef, Maryam Touzani from Morocco and France's Céline Devaux and Eléonore Gurrey.

It was a historical win at the Cannes Film Festival this year when Song Kang-ho (Parasite), star of Broker, became the first Korean male actor to win the Best Actor award. The film also won plaudits when it took home the Ecumenical Jury Award for Best Film.

Film needs new voices and the HFPA celebrates them: during the Cannes festival at the American Pavillion, our reporter K. J.

There was a two-minute standing ovation after Aftersun in Cannes, the Charlotte Wells directed film starring Paul Mescal (The Lost Daughter) and terrific newcomer, Frankie Corio, as a father and daughter duo on a vacation in Turkey. The film is a deeply personal character study by the Scottish director in her debut feature.

“Eighty percent of silent movies were lost before anyone realized how important they were,” Sandra Schulberg, president of IndieCollect in Los Angeles stated at the May 25th Hollywood Foreign Press Association Napoleon restoration event in Cannes. “Half of all movies made before 1950 have been lost.
