75th Cannes Film Festival

Swedish director Ruben Östlund is a master of dark satire. In his newest film he aims his camera at the entitled super rich survivors of a cruise ship that sank and left them trapped on an island.

The genie came out of the bottle when this story about a woman – Tilda Swinton – experiencing supernatural phenomena breaks a bottle and Idris Elba emerges. The magical tale is directed by George Miller.

The stars came out for Armageddon Time: Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and even a surprise appearance by Julia Roberts along with their colleagues walked the red carpet at the world premiere. The story of Armageddon Time is a deeply personal one for writer/director James Gray, reminiscent of Kenneth Branagh's Belfast, as our HFPA reporter team agreed after attending the screening.

Tom Cruise has not been to the Cannes fest since 1992 – but the long-awaited sequel to one of his biggest hits was reason enough to make a strong landing on the Croisette. Our HFPA reporter team Earl Gibson, Aniko Navai and Scott Orlin caught up with the stars on the red carpet, who were all on hand to promote the takeoff of a film that is bound to excite worldwide audiences in the weeks to come.

Cannes is not different from a pilgrimage: the gods of cinema make an appearance and the faithful follow, entranced, amused, and, sometimes, irate. In its long and illustrious 75-year journey, Cannes saw stars and filmmakers of all magnitudes interacting with their worshippers and their anointed (better yet: credentialed) clergy, the press.

After two years under the stormy clouds of COVID, Cannes comes back in full force. Films, stars, filmmakers - and fashion, of course.
