75th Cannes Film Festival

The 75th Cannes International Film Festival is over. While the festival celebrates the return to relative normalcy following a global pandemic, there is a new global threat just three hours away from the sunny beaches of the Cote d’Azur—Putin’s devastating war in Ukraine.

It wasn't exactly noon when Stars at Noon premiered on the second to last day - it was midnight. And that may have contributed to the slightly underwhelming showing of the film by Claire Denis, starring Joe Alwyn and Margaret Qualley, as Aniko Navai reports.

He was not so much the "Devil in Disguise" but rather very obvious in giving strong direction, even on the red carpet: Baz Luhrmann did it his way, and with Elvis Presley always on his mind for years, he knew it was now or never and walked the blue suede shoes towards the Lumiere Theater for the world premiere. “Sometimes opposite things happen at the same time in one's own life, like a strange morning – and at the same time, a rebirth,” says writer/director Mia Hanson-Løve (Things to Come, All is Forgiven) on the impetus of One Fine Morning (Un Beau Matin) which premiered in the Director’s Fortnight at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. Speaking after the screening, she explained the very personal narrative of the film which stars Léa Seydoux, Nicole Garcia and Pascal Greggory.

The 75th Cannes Film Festival came to a close and the final night saw the red carpet glamor continue, with Andie MacDowell, Diane Kruger, and Deepika Padukone showing the way. .

Even though classified as an Italian film in competition for the Palme d'Or, Le Otto Montagne (The Eight Mountains) was made by a team of Belgian filmmakers, including celebrated cinematographer Ruben Impens who received a nomination here only last year for Titane. HFPA reporter Greet Ramaekers caught up with him on the Rue d'Antibes in Cannes.

Not one but four films from Belgium are part of the Cannes competition this year: Charlotte Vandermeersch & Felix can Groeningen’s Le Otto Montagne, Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah Rebel and the Dardenne Bros,’ Tori et Lokita, Lukas Dhont’s Close. HFPA-reporter Greet Ramaekers talked to the actors and cinematographers who worked with them to explain their dedication on the road to major success.
