Alfonso Cuarón

In 2013, Jonás Cuarón experienced one of the most important moments in his career as a screenwriter. The film Gravity, which he wrote with his father, Alfonso Cuarón, earned four Golden Globe nominations and won for best director (Alfonso), and received other awards, including seven Oscars.

“The cartel has invaded everything! The festivals, Hollywood! We have kept everything!,” joked Alejandro González Iñárritu chatting with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2014 on his film Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Of course, the winner of two Golden Globes and the recipient of four nominations is far from being a drug dealer.

As has become tradition the directors of the five Golden Globe nominated foreign language films convened at the American Cinematheque for the Foreign Film Symposium. The roundtable discussion featured the directors of the five nominated films: Alfonso Cuarón (Roma), Lukas Dhont (Girl), Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (Never Look Away), Hirokazu Koreeda (Shoplifters) and Nadine Labaki (Capernaum).

Alfonso Cuarón returns to his childhood memories when talking about his newest film Roma, nominated for the Golden Globes in three categories: Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film. In 2014 he won a Golden Globe for Best Directing with Gravity.

Roma, Alfonso Cuarón’s valentine to his childhood in Mexico City won the Golden Lion at the 75th Venice Film Festival. Accepting the award, Cuarón said that the win was  “incredibly meaningful” to him, and noted that the festival’s closure took place on the birthday of the woman who inspired the film.

 “In this film, I was really revisiting a period of my life,” says Alfonso Cuarón of his latest film, Roma. “But I did it in  a very specific way.
