Golden Globe Moments

Jane Fonda and John Travolta receive a special Golden Globe as World Film Favorites at the 36th Golden Globes, January 27, 1979, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.  This award, discontinued in 1980, was determined according to the results of a worldwide survey by the Reuters News Bureau.

It’s 1989 and Tom Hanks has just walked off stage with what would be the first of four Golden Globes. The film is Big, his first big-time starring job since his breakout role in Ron Howard’s magical rom-com Splash, in 1984.

Both Sigourney Weaver for Gorillas in the Mist and Jodie Foster for The Accused win Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama in a three-way tie with Shirley MacLaine for Madame Sousatzka, at the 46th Golden Globes, held Saturday, January 28, 1989, at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Bruce Springsteen receives the Best Song Golden Globe for “Streets of Philadelphia” from the film Philadelphia, directed by Jonathan Demme, starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, at the 51st Golden Globes held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Saturday, January 22, 1994.  .

Sophia Loren, recipient of her fourth World Film Favorite special award, with Liza Minnelli, at the 34th Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, on Saturday, January 29, 1977. The popular Italian movie star was voted World Film Favorite four times, in 1964 with Paul Newman, in 1965 with Marcello Mastroianni, in 1969 with Sidney Poitier, in 1977 with Robert Redford.

Anthony Quinn receives the Cecil B. deMille award, for Outstanding Contributions to the World of Entertainment, on stage at the 44th Golden Globes, held Saturday, January 31, 1987, at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Robert Mitchum receives the Cecil B. deMille trophy, awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for Outstanding Contributions to the World of Entertainment, at the 49th Golden Globes held the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Saturday, January 18, 1992.

On In March 5th, 1959 Shirley MacLaine was at the 16th Golden Globes, held at the Ambassador Hotel’s Cocoanut Grove, receiving a special award from the Hollywood Foreign Press as Most Versatile Actress of 1958, for her work in Vincente Minnelli’s Some Came Running, co-starring Frank Sinatra. In 1955 MacLaine had won a Golden Globe as Star of Tomorrow, after her film debut in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble with Harry.
