Golden Globe Moments

Kirk Douglas arrives at the 33rd Golden Globes with his German-born wife Anne, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Saturday, January 24, 1976. They met in Paris, married in 1954 and are still together, at age 101 and 99.

In 1960 Marilyn Monroe attended the 17th Golden Globes, held on Tuesday, March 8 at the Cocoanut Grove, Ambassador Hotel, when she won as Best Actress for the comedy Some Like It Hot, directed by Billy Wilder costarring Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. On that occasion, she wore a white fur stole over a white dress.

On stage at the 33rd Golden Globes, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Saturday, January 24, 1976, producer Michael Douglas accepts a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Drama for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, from presenter Gena Rowlands. His father Kirk Douglas had bought the rights to the 1962 novel by Ken Kesey and produced it in 1963 as a musical play on Broadway, playing the title role that Jack Nicholson would play in the movie version.

Marina Cisternas, President of HFCA (Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association, that merged with the FPAH, Foreign Press Association of Hollywood, to form the HFPA, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, in 1955), presents to Frank Sinatra the newly designed Golden Globe trophy, as recipient of a special award “for the picture with the best international feeling produced in 1945”, the short film The House I Live In, at the 3rd Golden Globes ceremonies held Saturday March 30, 1946 at the Hollywood Knickerbocker Club.  In 1953 Sinatra won a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actor for From Here to Eternity, directed by Fred Zinnemann, starring Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr, he won another Golden Globe as Best Actor for the Technicolor musical Pal Joey in 1958, was the recipient of the Cecil B.

Elizabeth Taylor, winner of a Sterling special award “for consistent performance considered most outstanding,” with her husband Mike Todd, producer of the Best Picture- Drama Around the World in 80 Days, and Debbie Reynolds, nominated for Best Actress in Musical or Comedy for Bundle of Joy, at the 14th Golden Globes, Thursday, February 28, 1957, at Cocoanut Grove, Ambassador Hotel.  Mike Todd was Taylor’s third husband.

Born in Beech Grove, Indiana, on March 24, 1930, Steve McQueen was the epitome of 1960s cool. An avid car and motorcycle racer who performed his own stunts (worth checking out – the 1963 war drama The Great Escape, the 1968 crime thriller Bullitt and the racing adventure Le Mans, 1971 – all the while keeping in mind that it’s McQueen right there on the screen, all the time…).

This is a pivotal moment in Jayne Mansfield’s career: after a tentative start with Warner Brothers, who signed her for a seven year contract in 1955, Mansfield had changed her mind when her two initial projects proved to be less than ideal. Jayne had the contract rescinded and fled for Broadway, where she starred alongside Walter Matthau in a successful production of George Axelrod’s comedy Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?On the night of the 13th Golden Globes, February 23, 1956, Jayne was starting anew.

At the 13th Golden Globes, held February 23, 1956, at the Cocoanut Grove of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, Grace Kelly (seated with producer Joe Pasternak (Anchors Aweigh, The Merry Widow, Please-Don’t Eat the Daisies)  received our special award as World Film Favorite-Female. It was one of Kelly's last - if not THE last - public appearance in Hollywood.
