Stars and industry leaders converged to Nikki Beach Sunday evening for a very good cause: the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), in association with Participant Media, awarded the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation (KSCF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending violence against children, a $500,000 grant. Support for entertainment-related charities, scholarship programs, and humanitarian efforts is a core mandate of the HFPA, which has already donated over $30 million over the past years and has been making a point of celebrating great causes in events such as the Cannes Film Festival.

The Bigamist (1953), a film noir restored with funding provided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, anchors a celebration of the 100 years anniversary of legendary actress and director Ida Lupino (1918-1995): Hard, Fast and Beautiful : The Films of Ida Lupino, which showcases six of her films, shown at the Billy Wilder Theater. They are all typical Lupino, tackling and exposing the dark underside of American society in the midpoint of the 20th century.

HFPA GranteeLos Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), the famed Arts High School, is located on the Cal State LA campus in East LA. It is considered to be one of the few top arts high schools in the country.

Louisiana is still one of the leading states for film and TV production, despite Atlanta’s new reign as “Hollywood East”. But the draw for independent as well as studio productions to shoot in the magical city of New Orleans, rich in history and visually stunning from the legendary French Quarter to the surrounding nature, is still strong (right now, there are three TV series and seven films shooting in the city).

HFPA Grantee Kids In The Spotlight (KITS) is a non-profit organization that provides motivational training in film for foster children and youth (ages 11-19). KITS works with Foster Group Home Agencies around Los Angeles County and provides services to two-four group homes per year.

HFPA GranteeBeing a first-generation American himself and having been brought up by hard-working Hispanic immigrants, Cal State LA's President William Covino knows the tremendous value of education, not only for one’s own life but for society at large. Covino has worked relentlessly to help increase the number of students attending Cal State LA and to make sure that students get the best value possible out of their educational experience.

Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan introduced special screenings of films restored thanks to Hollywood Foreign Press Association grants at the American Cinematheque. The program was presented jointly with the Film Foundation as part of the events celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Globe Awards.

In January the Hollywood Foreign Press Association  announced the award of a $2 million endowment to California State University Northridge to support the school’s acclaimed Department of Cinema and Television Arts. The grant is part of the Hollywood Foreign Press’ commitment to fostering excellence and diversity in film arts education.
