Omar Sharif, three time Golden Globe winner, an Egyptian-born international star, has died in Cairo, age 83. The only Egyptian actor to have achieved Hollywood stardom, Sharif emerged as a star very much like the way his character in Lawrence of Arabia emerges on the screen, in a classic shot devised by triple Golden Globe winner director David Lean, and photographed by ace British cinematographer, Golden Globe winner Fred Young: In what is perhaps one of the most dramatic entrances recorded on film, Sharif plays an Arab tribal chief, who join Peter O'Toole's Lawrence of Arabia in his fight against the Turkish army.

Jerry Weintraub, who died Monday, had a roller coaster life as an independent movie producer, reaching highs and lows in dizzying sequence in a career book-ended by two Golden Globe recognitions.   In the 1970s and 1980s he produced a handful of cutting edge features, starting with Robert Altman's Nashville, 1975, which garnered eleven Golden Globes nominations and one win.

Robert Chartoff, who died at age 81, was a successful and resourceful independent producer, whose movies reflected the zeitgeist of America at the end of the twentieth century. He is best known perhaps for producing Rocky [1976], which garnered Chartoff and his long-time producing partner, Irwin Winkler, six Golden Globes nominations and one win, for best movie-drama, as well as three Oscars.

The Hollywood Foreign Press marks the passing of a unique musical talent, and two-time Golden Globe honoree. James Roy Horner, prolific, pioneering and award-winning composer, film score orchestrator and conductor died when the turboprop plane he was flying solo crashed into the Los Padres National Forest in Southern California, June 22.

The suave French actor Luis Jourdan, who appeared in movies both in Hollywood and in his native France, passed away February 14, 2015, aged 93. His most notable and popular role was in the musical comedy Gigi, (1958) the last major musical out of MGM.

Sultry actress Lizabeth Scott (1922-2015), who just died in Hollywood of heart failure, was the star of a classic film noir that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association helped the Film Noir Foundation restore in 2013. Scott was born Emma Matzo in Scranton, Pa.

A giant of American theater and cinema passed away today. Mike Nichols put his name to such classics as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Graduate as well as beloved works like Catch 22, Working Girl and True Colors.

A past president of the HFPA, Helmut Voss has died after a long illness. Helmut, who was president from 1998-2000, was instrumental in the HFPA purchasing their present building on South Robertson in West Hollywood.

We mourn the passing of Richard Attenborough. He was a classically trained theater and film actor, a director and producer, a humanitarian, an art collector, the president of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and a lifelong Chelsea supporter.
