Just like last week, at the top of the Italian box office chart are the two biggest blockbusters currently in theaters, Jurassic World: Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick, both sequels and both linked to two cult franchises from the 1990s and 1980s. In its second weekend in Italian theaters, the sixth installment of the dinosaur saga has collected €2.

Blockbusters, blockbusters, blockbusters. And franchises too.

As stated last week, Italy's box office revenues, with the summer on its way, rely solely on blockbuster movies. A trend that has been confirmed with the highly-anticipated Top Gun: Maverick, which premiered on May 21 and 22 in The Space movie theaters.

If not for Doctor Strange 2, the Italian box office would have marked one of the worst weeks since the beginning of the year. But Marvel Studios' latest blockbuster worked like a magnet, attracting over a million fans and bringing some oxygen to the asphyctic market.

Many questions arose in the mind of Italian cinema-goers when confronted with the latest Covid measures. Since May 1st face masks have become “highly recommended” rather than mandatory in all social activities, from eating and drinking in restaurants and clubs, to shopping or visiting a museum.

Italians flocked to the cinema over the Easter weekend. And Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the third installment of the prequel to the Harry Potter saga, climbed in its first week of programming at the Box Office, reaching the top position and the €4 million mark.

The overall ranking of films at the Italian box office for the first half of the 2021/2022 season is out. A hard blow for Italian productions: only one Italian film managed to gain a space in the top ten: Me contro Te, released last August, a teen comedy starring the two young YouTube stars Sofia Scalia and Luigi Calagna.

After weeks of absolute domination, The Batman falls to the fourth position in Italy, while Corro da te, a romantic comedy by Riccardo Milano starring Pierfrancesco Favino and Miriam Leone, grosses another €509. 000 and lands on the lowest step of the podium, taking in a total of two million euros.

The Batman continues to run at the Italian box office. For the fourth weekend in a row, it still took home the highest taking in Italy, although 47% lower than seven days earlier.

Italy and its film production are at the center of attention today also in Hollywood, where this week is filled with free screenings in the multiplex Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, a few feet away from where the Oscar ceremony will be celebrated on Sunday, March 27th, for the yearly Los Angeles-Italia Film Festival, which brings to the Californian city a large selection of the Italian production – both films and television – of the year. Well-known actor Riccardo Scamarcio was on hand for the opening on Sunday night, introducing the film he produced – and stars in – The Shadow of the Day by Giuseppe Piccioni, with Benedetta Porcaroli who was also present.
