When Johnny Depp walked the red carpet in Cannes three weeks ago on opening night – he plays Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry – it was the first time in years that he had made headlines in connection with his profession instead of his personal life. At 60, the Golden Globe-winner is ready for more film projects and a comeback of sorts.

It happened by sheer coincidence. As Johnny Depp was walking up the steps at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes on the night of May 16, truckloads of Nick Wallis’ book “Depp v Heard” were being shipped, unpacked and put in the windows at the stores in the United Kingdom.

The 76th annual Cannes film festival hinted at trends on its glamorous opening night.  Elle Fanning showcased a silver and nude gown by Alexander McQueen with a skirt that could have come from The Great in its volume.

For over 40 years the HFPA has recorded famous and celebrated actresses, actors, and filmmakers. The world's largest collection of its kind - over 10,000  items - is now in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences Margaret Herrick Library.

The Berlin International Film Festival demonstrated what we all know: men CAN look amazing on the red carpet. Individualism and flair were the keywords of the week.

If you grew up under the spell of Captain Jack Sparrow you will probably  find it difficult to believe that, back in 1990s, Johnny Depp was the muse of independent filmmakers both stateside and abroad, and a regular Cannes fixture - in competition, not to promote some massive blockbuster. Our multi-nominated and Best Actor Golden Globe winner was in Cannes twice with (a young, bold) Tim Burton, in 1990 for Edward Scissorhands and in 1994 for Ed Wood - nominated for a Palme d'Or and responsible for the most coveted promotional item on the Croisette, that year: a black t-shirt with 'Mon prochain film sera meilleur' ('My next film will be bettter') inscribed in giant pink letters.

Sometimes even the well oiled Disney machine stumbles. This appears to be the case with its reported $170-million sequel Alice: Through the Looking Glass, grossing “just” $100.
