2022 Black History Month

The Pratt in the Hat is a short film directed by Susan Hillary (aka Shapiro) about civil rights leader Dr. Frances Pratt, Nyack NAACP President for decades.

It's regarded as one of the most violent forms of repression which America uses against its own citizens, certainly the most violent in the U. S.

Born in 1923 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Madeline Anderson loved her weekly visits to the movie theater but was upset that she never saw Black people she could relate to on the screen. When she graduated from high school in 1945, she entered Millersville State Teacher’s College, where she was the only Black student, but dropped out after one year having suffered constant harassment.

Not since the race film genre of movies that started around 1915 and continued till the 1950s was there another movement in cinema history where Black filmmakers made films with all-Black casts and crews primarily for Black audiences till the blaxploitation era of the early 1970s. The similarities in both movements abound.

We wanted to end Black History Month on a high note. So, we decided to end on not one but six! For over 50 years, the HFPA has nominated numerous Black artists in the category of Best Song.

"This is the one place where they can't stop Black people from voting," said three-time Golden Globe nominee and host of the show Anthony Anderson in his opening statements at the 53rd NAACP Image Awards. He also praised Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who on February 25, became the first Black woman to be nominated to the Supreme Court.

He won his first Golden Globe in 1983 for An Officer and a Gentlemen. Nine years later, he won his second, this time for starring with Lynn Whitfield in The Josephine Baker Story, a made-for-television movie.

The American Civil Rights movement is an enormous topic, at once a vital part of the history of the United States and also tremendously difficult to distill for those who didn’t actually live some portion of it, because of age or a different country of origin. Thankfully, in celebration of Black History Month, Eyes on the Prize, the trenchant, 14-hour, two-part, Peabody- and Emmy Award-winning documentary series created and executive produced by Henry Hampton, is receiving a deserved boost in profile.

It was his first win and second nomination, when Mahershala Ali took to the stage as Best Supporting Actor in Green Book in 2019 and gave the most gracious speech, honoring his director Peter Farrelly and his co-stars Viggo Mortensen and Linda Cardellini. .
