Depending on the point of view – and where you are in your career – playing super popular heroes such as Batman and Superman can be a blessing or a curse. It can launch an actor into the dizzy stratosphere of fame and glory, and it can also mark him for life.

The HBO series Vinyl recreated the look of the 1970s with care and precision. Let's rewind to the actual 1970s and check out how stars really dressed to attend what was, already, the party of the year: the Golden Globes.

Happy belated 80th birthday to our six-time Golden Globe winner Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo, born January 28m 1936 in New York, NY - and better known as Alan Alda. Nominated 14 times, Alda received his six Globes for his work on the same show: as Captain Benjamin Pierce in the hit TV series M*A*S*H.

How about we travel back to January 22, 1954, and a very special Golden Globe ceremony held at Club Del Mar in Santa Monica, California? Grace Kelly won a Globe as best supporting actress for her work in Mogambo, and received it from the hands of Robert Taylor and Eleanor Parker. Spencer Tracy won the best actor Golden Glove for his performance in The Actress (he seems absolutely intrigued by Grace Kelly in this photo…) What made the gala unique: it was co-sponsored by the HFCA and the FPAH, the two organizations that, one year later, would merge to form the HFPA.

Happy 100th, Francis Albert Sinatra, born December 12, 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey! Here’s Frank in 1958 receiving a Golden Globe award as Best Actor for the Technicolor musical Pal Joey, directed by George Sidney. The singing voices of his costars, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak, were dubbed.

The 1954 awards were held jointly by the HFCA (Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association) and the FPAH (Foreign Press Association of Hollywood), the two organizations that would merge in 1955 to form the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association). The invitation came from The International Press of Hollywood for the Presentation of the Golden Globe and World Film Favorites of 1953, on Friday January 22, 1954 at Club Del Mar, 1910 Ocean Front, Santa Monica.

In the early years the Golden Globe awards were a less formal affair than they are today, when they are celebrated in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel since 1974. In 1947, 1948 and 1949 the Globes were held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and in 1951 and 1952 at Ciro’s, a popular nightclub at 8433 Sunset Blvd.
