HFPA

Besides the announcement of this year's grantees, the annual banquet is also a moment for getting together, meeting friends and having a good time while doing good.

Opening a new cycle that will culminate with the Golden Globes on January 5th, 2020, the Hollywood Foreign Press launched the festivities with the traditional Grants Banquet on July 31st, reinforcing its commitment to philanthropy and support to education and the arts. Held this year at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, CA, the banquet was hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a bevy of stars helped the HFPA give out this year's grants.

The HFPA Residency brings young filmmakers to Hollywood for a three-week intensive program of master classes and workshops on film making and distribution and intensive sessions on financing as well as screenings.  Fellows are paired with individual mentors who are respected filmmakers to help hone their skills and help them onto the next stage of their careers.

On March 9, 2019, the HFPA hosted a summit to spotlight the crisis threatening the world's film heritage. Luminaries in the film preservation field discussed the decay endangering films worldwide and the need to restore, archive and protect them before it’s too late.

The HFPA is partnering with France's Institut Lumière on the restoration of world's earliest films. The project seeks to preserve the world's cinema heritage as well as promote classic films with younger generations.

The Festival Lumière is celebrating its tenth anniversary as the world's premiere festival devoted to classic films. Held in Lyon every October, the festival is an homage to films as art as well as cherished objects or collective memory.

The HFPA along with the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), and International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), hosted a special panel, “Safeguarding the Truth: Press Freedom and the Fight for Accountability" in partnership with the University of Southern California (USC) Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism on the USC campus. The lively and informative panel featured award winning journalists including Ramzi Malouki (HFPA member and Los Angeles-based correspondent for Canal Plus), Bastian Obermayer (ICIJ member and deputy head of the investigative unit of Süddeutsche Zeitung), Marina Walker-Guevara (ICIJ deputy director), Joel Simon (CPJ executive director), and Sheila Coronel (director of the Toni Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia Journalism School).

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the first Residency Awards at the Toronto International Film Festival. The program, which builds on last year’s Canada Shorts Award, was aimed at TIFF’s Film Makers Lab, and the twenty-two film makers who participated in the festival’s mentorship program directed by Jane Shoettle.
