When Jane Fonda spoke at last year’s HFPA Restoration Summit, she described herself as “a newbie at this whole film restoration thing. ” That may have been partially true (in fact it was the second year that she had done us the honor of speaking at our Summit), but Ms.

Actress, producer, activist and living film legend Jane Fonda was a panelist at our first Summit in 2019. That’s where the idea was born to restore FTA, the documentary on the anti-war movement in the US military, with and produced by Fonda and Donald Sutherland in 1971.

FTA is the title of a documentary, lost for almost 50 years, directed by Francine Parker and produced by 15-time Golden Globe nominee and 7 times winner Jane Fonda with eight-time Golden Globe nominee and two-time winner Donald Sutherland. The film is about the tour that the two famous actors did of military bases across the United States, the Philippines, and Japan in 1971, bringing political satire, songs, poetry, conversations and questions about the role of the United States in the Vietnam war to the soldiers, many of whom were actively opposed to the conflict at the time.

For over 40 years the HFPA has recorded famous and celebrated actresses, actors and filmmakers. The world's largest collection of its kind - over 10,000  items - is now in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences Margaret Herrick Library.

There is probably no better place for a classic film festival than Lyon, France. After all, it’s the hometown of brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière who developed the Cinematographe projector and whose Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory in Lyon, a 46-second documentary first shown in 1895, is considered the first motion picture ever made.

Golden Globe winner Jane Fonda is out in the theatres with a cool comedy, The Book Club. the cherry on top of a marvelous career that started with Tall Story, a 1960 black and white film co-starring Anthony Perkins.

The Palazzo del Cinema crowd gave what seemed an interminable standing ovation to Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, as they were called onto the stage by Festival Director Alberto Barbera to receive the Golden Lion. It was the first time in the festival’s history that the career prize was given to two filmmakers at the same time, and never could it have been more appropriate.

The 1970s hit the Croisette hard, amd Cannes fell deeply in love with the sex, drugs and rock 'n roll generation that was shaking Hollywood to the foundations. An unsung master among giants, Hal Ashby became the darling of the 1978 edition of the festival with his soulful, blistering Coming Home, the story of what happens to warriors after the war is over.
