The story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart seen through the eyes of rival composer Antonio Salieri, who recounts his relationship with the young prodigy from a lunatic asylum he's been confined to - Mozart’s pure genius drove him literally nuts. Following in the footsteps of On Golden Pond, Terms of Endearment tells the story of the relation between a mother (Shirley MacLaine) and a daughter (Debra Winger) with a retired astronaut in the mix for good measure (Jack Nicholson). 15 years of difficult interaction between the two women with a sad denouement, a cocktail of laughs and tears which the audience found irresistible.

It was a good year for musicals and comedies, but Barbra triumphed. Yentl.

On Golden Pond was Henry Fonda's final film role, and he made the best of it with his convincing, moving portrayal of a curmudgeon for which he won the Golden Globe Award for  Best Actor, and went on to win the Oscar. Directed by Mark Rydell, the film was written by Ernest Thompson who adapted it from his 1979 play of the same name.
